Big Lick Murals
One of over a dozen murals in the Downtown area, It's hard not to stare up at the large mural on the side of The Lofts at West Station when you visit Big Lick Brewing Co. for a beer. Artist James Bullough left the piece up to interpretation. He wants people to start discussions about what they think is happening. Is the woman falling out of a window? Was she knocked off her feet? Nestled between the Municipal and Commonwealth buildings, Henrietta Lacks Plaza boasts beautiful annual flower beds surrounding enormous elms and crepe myrtles. Renamed in 2021, this plaza celebrates Lacks, a native Roanoker, and her contribution to modern science.
Higher Education Building
The main building is located in the former headquarters of the Norfolk and Western Railroad in the heart of downtown Roanoke. A total of $19 million in state, local, and private funding, as well as federal and state historic tax credits, were used to transform the 1931 Art Deco building into a state-of-the-art facility for learning. It supports a mix of traditional classroom instruction, computer-assisted instruction, and distance learning instruction to meet a wide variety of student learning styles and needs. Classrooms, meeting rooms, and spaces also accommodate business gatherings, and are publicly available for rent.

Martin Luther King Memorial
The Martin Luther King Jr. statue at the Martin Luther King Memorial Bridge in Downtown Roanoke stands as a 7-foot tall bronze statue that was designed by the husband-and-wife team of Jeffrey and Anna Varilla. The bridge, formerly known as the Henry Street Bridge, was renamed and dedicated in honor of Dr. King in 2008. The spot used to serve as a symbol of segregation in the city as it divided Downtown Roanoke from the Gainsboro neighborhood. Now, the bridge and statue feature quotes from Dr. King and it serves as a powerful symbol of the region's rich African American heritage and history. It's also located near the former Hotel Dumas on Henry Street, which was known for being the spot of legendary late-night jam sessions with musical icons like Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington and Count Basie
